Then I get the pleasure of adjusting the valves and installing the thing into the car.

Paint? Hell, I'd keep it that way, because patina.

Nice! Now you're getting me in the mood to pull my engine. How long did it take you from pull to put back in? What all did you do with it out?

It took two days to pull. I had to remove the entire doghouse and it is my first time doing an engine swap. It has been months since there has been an engine in the car, I've needed to find and buy parts that aren't reproduced, had to research camshafts/transmissions/other things, had to work around my work schedule and school, as well as other delays. I have replaced several wear parts, installed a 4 barrel manifold (instead of the old 2-barrel), put in a new camshaft, as well as added some newer higher performance heads. I am also swapping from a th350 trans to a 700r4.

It looks pretty bad; it is a mix of corporate and Pontiac blue, rust, and grease.

Awesome! This is gonna look killer when done.

I'm still dealing with the problems on mine, and just to be absolutely sure I just have to ask you; On the fuelpump, which nipple goes where? I'm assuming that the bottom one is the receiver, and that the "screw in" thingy goes up to the carb correct? That leaves one left, which I've always assumed is to the return line. But you wouldn't happen to know if it's supposed to go directly back to the tank or if it goes somewhere else first?

The screw one goes to the carb, one is the reciever, and the last one is the return line. The return goes directly back to the tank. I have the plumbing for a return line, but the PO installed a Chevy 350 that didn't have a return line outlet in the fuel pump. I think she left the return line open to the elements.

Ahh quite the project then! I think if I pulled mine, I'd do some engine clean up and painting, throw a new cam, intake and carb on it, and call it good. Maybe down the line I'd do a more complete engine build (make sure the bottom end is solid, domed pistons to up compression, maybe different heads), but with my budget and my time and my goals, I can get done what I need with just a top end build.

Sounds awesome though! Can't wait to see it back in the bird!

That looks great! I'm looking forward to your next build post.

Okay as I thought then, thanks! The reason I was wondering is because I've now done all the "plumbing" for the return line back to the tank. The thing is that it's spewing out so much fuel that I was beginning to think that it might be the main fuel line. Oh well, back to the diagnosing of the problem, for me.
